In 1885 the Reverend Stamer opened a Sunday School over a carpenter’s shop in Bridge Street (Ridley Street) Mount Pleasant. It became a day school in the following year. By 1861 demand was so great that an iron school/church had to be erected and was further replaced by a new school/church dedicated to Saint Paul which was built in 1867.

The land was then given by Mr C.J.Smith who was one of the local coal mine owners of the time. Saint Paul’s was again rebuilt on the site in 1884. A primarily school was built alongside the church also taking the church’s name of Saint Paul. The first service was held on 20th August 1885
